EXAM DAY TWO

How shoot two went, and what occurred-
To begin shoot two i embarked on a journey to London, commuting from Broxbourne, to Tottenham Hale through Euston to Camden Town. I walked around Camden finding certain interesting individuals to document either candid or 'posed candid' due to gaining permission to be so close and personal to the subject, although some images are posed by the models they engaged in real conversations and got to know me and the project more as time went on as spent a fair amount of time on each subject in each area. Around Camden i met a lot of interesting people and documented all of this accordingly. I believe it is important to spend a fair amount of time in one place to gain a complete understanding of the daily activities and energy that occurs in the surroundings. Once leaving Camden, i went underground for about an hour and a half staying in the same areas to gain a complete concept of those who go through the underground daily during 'rush hour', to document 'rush hour' in the tube was a lot more difficult than i had hoped and limited my ability to actually document people inside of the tube due to the confined and cramped areas causing lack of movement thus ensuring that i would not be able to focus on a specific person and thus picking a subject became impossible. The tube line i picked to stay on was the VICTORIA LINE. After finishing in the underground i headed towards Westminster on the JUBILEE LINE. I documented social change and individuals commuting home in various ways, at this location.

How well did i link my work from shoot two to photographers Bob Mazzer and Matt Hart?
During shoot two i kept both photographers in mind at all times, looking for couples specifically to fit Matt Hart's documentary photography of PDA (public displays of affection) as well as his documentary of London's social scene. As for Bob Mazzer i think his work is highly reflective throughout my whole series of images from shoot two as i aimed to explore the underground, the station and the area surrounding the station. This is important as it shows how two similar, yet very different photographers can interlink throughout inspiration being drawn from both in an attempt to 'join forces'. I again, kept every image in black and white to link specifically to Matt Hart's work who emphasises on creating a contrasting image to the brightness. He does this to show the rawness and create a harsh contrast between foreground and background. Thus connoting how the image can be perceived in many different ways. By using black and white imagery for my documentary series it emphasises the stereotypical view of 'documentary' as it makes the images look old, worn and like every image has a deep uncovered story behind it, by doing this it causes many connotations and denotations to occur (these will be explored in 'straight images, final work' blog post).

EXAM DAY ONE

the exam question chosen and why-

The question for the AS photography exam on the 24th of April, 2017 that i chose was 'Question 3, every day activities'.
To do this i aim to explore urban, suburban, and major cities as well as the idea of every day school activities at college/sixth form at Harlow College. To explore the urban and suburban areas i will present modern day societies in their natural habitat, these towns include Harlow, Hoddesdon, Broxbourne, Waltham Cross, Waltham Abbey and Cheshunt. I aim to portray this via shooting individuals to a great extent of depth to gather knowledge of them via a photograph, i may have to approach the individual and learn more about them to gain access to photograph them as those in smaller towns are a lot more conservative and are not as open about the arts as major cities are. To explore major cities i will explore greater London (central London) as well as the underground of London to gain a full understanding of the daily commute of those who part-take in it daily. To capture those from London, consent may have to be given as well out of respect. However, i aim to pursue the whole task and exam on a candid basis to gain access to the individuals personality without being known they are being documented. I believe by doing this it allows me to stay objective and perform the task in a way that the photographers i have researched and drawn inspiration from did. To perform the task of presenting the individuals at college i will aim to make my work stand out in terms of capturing the true innocence of teenagers at college, i plan on showing education how it is, the images will be raw and unfiltered and i think this captures the rarity of being able to capture individuals in such a personal environment. Theres messing about, working and playing on phones (which is a major part of 21st century education). This is what will make my work stand out as i am able to show the vast differences between modern and socially acceptable methods of education.

The photographers i have researched include-
Bob Mazzer
Matt Hart
Bruce Davidson
and, Daniel Ochoa De Olza

how shoot one went and what occurred-
To begin the exam i begun by planning out the shoot for the first three hours provided, i decided to start on a smaller scale by combining two shoots in one for an hour, i decided that i was going to focus on urban areas as well as exploration of school life for the project of 'every day activities' so i begun by exploring Harlow town and The Water Gardens of Harlow Town to attempt to photograph those in their natural habitats. The town was quiet due to the time of day which was a shame as i was not able to photograph many different demographics to make the photo shoot fair to say I'm exploring 'every day activities of the urban townsfolk'. However, by doing the shoot during school time it allowed me to grasp a further understanding on the infant and elder population in Harlow.
However, to further my project i will aim to photograph those of a teenage and adult demographic during their daily actives to gain a full understanding of how those of urban areas tend to go about their day-to-day lives. To do this i shall photograph them on a commuting journey (410 trusty bus, Harlow through to Hoddesdon) and/or a train journey to/from home.

what have i got planned for shoot two?
Shoot two will involve commuting around London and a lot of people watching. To demonstrate the elder generation i will spend a whole day on the central line and in and out of stations and coffee shops to gather a full understanding and as many photos as possible. I will attempt to show this in a way that photographer Bob Mazzer and photographer Matt Hart did, this will allow me to present images in and out of the underground to gain full knowledge of individuals on their daily commute, even if these images capture a snap shot it allows the audience to work out how their day has been and what it will be like and this will all be down to their appearance, body language, facial expression and how they are dressed. Here are two images that i have drawn the most inspiration from during this whole project. The image on the left is by Matt Hart who explored London documenting individuals he found interesting, all of his work is candid and black and white based. The image on the right is by Bob Mazzer who documented the London Underground every day on the central line. His images vary from black and white to colour. I aim to keep my images in black and white as i believe it gives the 'stereotypical view of documentary'
